This Dallas modern estate received a full-property land design and build — circle drive in colored concrete, custom steel pergola, negative-edge spa, tiered planters, retaining walls, and privacy hedging executed as one cohesive outdoor environment. Site work, hardscape, water features, lighting, and planting were sequenced and installed by the Blount Designs in-house team.
What did this project solve?
A new-build modern home arrived with no exterior environment — bare grade, no drive, no plant material, no privacy. The scope wired everything together at once: rough grading, an underground drainage system, a colored, etch-finish circle drive with smooth-trowel approaches and lead walks, plastered and raw-finish concrete retaining walls sized to the slope, and a custom steel picket pool fence sequenced so the pool deck pour didn't get blocked.

How was the design developed?
Every wall, fence, and hardscape element was drawn before the first pour. The scope ran through permitting, bid collection, cost analysis, value engineering, and construction-draft documents — then into material selection with the homeowner. Helical piers under the longest concrete wall, footings sized to the soil, and waterproofing and drainage detailing on every wall meant the structural decisions were made on paper, not in the field.
What materials and plants were used?
Hardscape ran in two voices: clean plastered concrete for the perimeter walls and pedestal, and raw-finish concrete plus a steel accent wall for the modern moments closer to the house. The drive and lead walks share a 12" colored band setup with smooth-trowel, acid-etched, sealed surfaces; the public-side approaches use a 50/50 color blend so the curbside concrete reads softer than the property-side hardscape. Planting layered 4"- and 6"-canopy trees, ornamental trees, screening shrubs, ground cover, and sod over crushed Silvermist gravel beds — see our landscape and gardens scope for how the plant palette was selected — with 11-gauge black-metal edging, native rip rap, boulders, and steel planters as accents. A 65" black ceiling fan, low-voltage uplights, R40 LED moonlights, MR16 downlights, path lights, and tape lighting in NUR 3000K tie the property together after sundown, all run on a 300-watt transformer.
How does the outdoor program live day-to-day?
The pool and negative-edge spa are the back-of-house anchor — the matching pool and spa work is paired with a custom steel pergola for shade and a decorative pool fence that meets code without breaking the modern line. The outdoor living program connects the front circle drive, lead walks, side gardens, and rear pool deck into one continuous experience. Privacy hedging plus a steel utility screen handle the work of hiding mechanical equipment without adding visual clutter, and a dedicated low-voltage lighting circuit lets the front pavilion, pergola, and back deck switch on cleanly after sundown.
